You’ll be able to put your keep in the water as well, which is a great way to cool off before you head back.

Annie’s Canyon Trail

One of San Diego’s best and most unique trails is the Annie’s Canyon trail. It’s a short 1.5-mile hike that leads you through a narrow slot canyon. Don’t be surprised if you feel as if you’re walking through the pages of a novel.

The trail’s tight squeezes and dramatic twists add an element of excitement and challenge. This factor makes it a favorite among both experienced hikers and those looking for a thrilling but accessible trek.

You can access this nature hike by a few different trailheads, with North Rios, Solana Hills, and La Orilla offering easy access.

It’s located about 30 minutes from San Diego, making it the perfect spot for an afternoon hike.

Cowles Mountain

Looking for a hike that gives you a spectacular view of the city? Then Cowles Mountain is the place to go. It’s about a three-mile, moderate trail that’s located 25 minutes from the city.

Once you make it to the top, there’s a 360-degree view, which will be worth the hike.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve

If you’re looking for a hike that’s long but fairly easy, this hike is for you. Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is only 25 minutes away from San Diego.

It’s family-friendly, easy to access, and offers amazing views. You’ll see a waterfall and lots of cliffs. There are also spots that are shaded, so you can rest if you need to.

Keep an eye out for offshoot trails to explore. The parking fee is $3 so bring some cash if you can to make paying easy.

Eagle Rock

Eagle Rock is about an hour and a half from San Diego, but trust us, it’s worth the drive. This cool spot is located off the Pacific Crest Trail, and it’s not as busy as some of the other San Diego hikes on this list.

The parking is free, and it’s considered to be easy/moderate. Eagle Rock is a formation on the trail that is, as you probably guessed, shaped like an eagle. It’s very impressive and worth the lengthy hike.

Potato Chip Rock via Mt. Woodson Trail

Another uniquely shaped rock formation is on Mt. Woodson Trail. It’s one of the more popular hiking sites and will likely be heavily trafficked. It’s only a 35-minute drive from the city, and it cost $10 to park if you’re going on a weekend or holiday.

Potato Chip Rock has a thin sliver of rock that hangs in the air. It might be one of the most photographed landmarks in San Diego.

If you want to beat the crowd and get an uninterrupted view of the rock and ocean, you’ll want to be early in the morning. If you’re going on a weekend, be prepared to wait in line to get a picture on the rock.

Packing List for San Diego Hikes

Before you set off to places to hike in San Diego, it’s important that you have the essentials. The right footwear will ensure you have a good experience. If your feet are hurting, if blisters are forming, or if your boots are slipping off, you’re going to have a less-than-ideal time.

Your boots should have good ankle support and traction as well.

Fueling your body for a hike in San Diego is also vital. You don’t want to run out of energy halfway through your hike or worse, become dehydrated.

Bringing a reusable water bottle or hydration pack will make it easier to drink water throughout the day. You should also pack some electrolyte-rich snacks that will help replenish the nutrients that you lose while you’re sweating.

Even on cool days, the California sun can be brutal. You may not even realize your skin is burning. Packing sunscreen and reapplying is key.
